I have been having the swollen toe for some years . Initially doctors just diagnosed it as some bone problem . But later other doctor tested me for uris acid and found my uric acid levels high . Has advices me to lose weight which I am doing and take allopurinol everyday . But still I get the attacks and now it’s shifted to my ankle . Does losing weight help & is it genetical? What food to eat & what to avoid ? Read quite a few articles but it’s confusing . Only one who can help me r those who go thru this pain like me .

You must get more precise with your care. Define “HIGH” uric acid.
You must use that amount of allopurinol that gets your uric acid below 6.0 or better 5.0 mg./dL. (Depending on your part of the world the molar definitions of these amounts might be different but easily convertible.)
?
When you are controlling your uric acid to a low enough level with the right amount of allopurinol?your attacks will decrease and eventuallly (or quite quickly) STOP.
?
A sensible weight is desirable but rapid weight loss is actually LIKELY to cause gout attacks becasue of the breakdown of cellular material. Weight loss won't likely help much but allopurinol will.
?
How much allopurinol are you talking. Have you gotten a uric acid level since you started?
February 20, 2012 at 5:06 am #12618subhashishParticipanti am taking allupurinol 300 . i havent gone to the doctor after that .
my uric acid level was 11 at that point which later came down to sub 7 . he told me to continue with all. 300 . but now i think i might have to go again as i did have a pain in my ankle and swelling which subsided within 3 days . the diet is what is confusing me . what to avoid … red meat , sea fish , hydrogenated oil ..somewhere i read oatmeal !! if u do follow some chart pls advice .
?
no i dont take hashish ?thats my name in hindi which means blessings .
February 20, 2012 at 5:41 am #12620limpyParticipantI?had pain in both my ankles first one then the other. This went on for 18?months. rhumy had me on 200mgs of Allpo. It was just enough to lower my acid level and put me in a place where you don't want to be.?I finally got a doc to up my Allop to 300mgs. Bang?I got off the two Colchicine a day that I'd been on for 18 months. Get your acid level down in the 5 range even if you have to up your dose of Allop to 400 or 500 mgs. If your doctor won't listen. Find one who will. I believe if I'd been put on 300mgs starting off ( just like ZIP2PLAY said)?it would have saved me months of pain and heart problems from the steroids. Good luck. Limpy

subhashish,
?
That level is just not good enough. Alas, it is exactly what one might expect starting at so high a level of SUA. I recommend you up to 400mg./day allopurinol for a month?and see if you can get it lower. Between 6 and 7 is a terrible place for gouties to be.
?
You may NEVER get to the desirable level of below 5.0, but the least you should settle for is consistent levels below 6.0 ALL THE TIME.
?
If you are a beer drinker, consider switching to another beverage.

February 21, 2012 at 7:04 am #12636odoParticipantOnce you get your SUA down to a stable ~5.00mg/dL your diet won't be nearly as important as you think it is now. Personally, I still avoid beer, offal & shellfish, but others may disagree.
